LARP leg armor

With leg armor, LARPers run into trouble. Most systems tell us we need to cover our lower legs and upper legs for maximum armor points. The lower legs are no problem - greaves are the answer. The upper legs, cuisses, are a problem. Most thigh armor suitable for larping is actually SCA armor and they cover the knee too. I really didn't want knee armor since it looks cumbersome. I was able to find good-looking leg armor on Ebay and contact the seller about making just greaves and cuisses. No problem. I went 18 guage steel to get 3 points per location under NERO armor rules. These needed extra straps because without the knee, there was nothing to stop the cuisses from sliding right down my leg. The straps loop up to my belt or belt loops.

If you don't go steel cuisses, there are leather cuisses to consider. Leather will fit more snugly to your legs and you won't have to work as hard to keep it from sliding down the leg. You can also get a long chainmail shirt that covers the upper legs or even a chainmail tunic that covers upper and lower legs. I didn't consider these options because I imagined they would make running impossible, especially the tunic.
